PAPER TYPES

Paper - as it applies to 99% of most peoples' needs - can generally be described as bond, text, cover, bristol, tag or index. Further, it is more specifically defined by its weight and type, as well as whether it's coated (e.g., glossy) or uncoated.

And, the way different types of paper is referred to is determined differently for each type of paper. Bottom line, it's like comparing apples to oranges.

For example, 20 lb bond is referred to as 20lb bond because the weight of 500 sheets of that particular paper - each sheet measuring 17" x 22" - weighs 20 pounds. On the other hand, 60lb cover is referred to as 60lb cover because the weight of 500 sheets of that particular paper - each sheet measuring 20" x 26" - weighs 60 pounds.

Reams of text and bond paper - when purchased in the US standard of 8.5" x 11" - contain 500 sheets. Heavier stock such as cover and Bristol come in reams of 250 sheets.

BOND

Bond paper - similar to and often referred to as text - is thinner paper that most of us identify with as copy paper, letter head, flyers and bulletins. It is always available in white. It is easy to fold will go through virtually any modern day printer without a problem. Bond paper is usually sold in reams of 500 sheets and is referred to as 20lb, 24lb, 28lb and 32lb. Bond paper gets its "poundage" handle based on the weight of 500 sheets of 17" x 22" sheets. So, 500 17x22 sheets of paper that weighs 20 lbs is 20b bond.

TEXT

Text paper - similar to and often referred to as bond and "book" - is paper that most of us identify with as copy paper, letter head, flyers and bulletins. It is commonly available in both white and colors. It is easy to fold will go through virtually any modern day printer without a problem. Text paper is generally sold in reams of 500 sheets and is referred to as 20lb, 50lb, 60lb, 70lb, 80lb and 100lb. Bond paper gets its "poundage" handle based on the weight of 500 sheets of 25" x 38" sheets. So, 500 25x38 sheets of paper that weighs 50 lbs is 50lb text. Get it? Similar paper type to bond, but measured by different sheet size.

COVER

Cover paper - also referred to as card stock - is thicker paper. Most of us would identify cover paper with such things as post cards, index cards, business cards, raffle tickets and ID tags. Cover paper is usually sold in reams of 250 sheets and is referred to as 60lb, 65lb, 80lb, 90lb, and 100lb. Cover paper gets its "poundage" handle based on the weight of 250 sheets of 20" x 26" sheets. So, 500 20x26 sheets of paper that weighs 60 lbs is 60lb cover. Get it? Similar paper type to bond, but measured by different sheet size.

BRISTOL

Bristol paper - also referred to as card stock - is heavier paper. Our standard raffle ticket and auction card stock is 67lb Vellum Bristol. Cover paper is usually sold in reams of 250 sheets and is available in 57lb, 67lb and 80lb. Cover paper gets its "poundage" handle based on the weight of 250 sheets of 22.5" x 28.5" sheets. So, 250 22.5x28.5 sheets of paper that weighs 67lbs is 67lb bristol.

TAG

Tag paper is heavier paper that is very durable and tear resistant. Tag paper is available in reams of 250 sheets in 100lb, 125lb, 150lb. and 175lb basis weight, which is based on the weight of 250 sheets of 24" x 36" sheets.

INDEX

Index paper is a smooth and stiff paper and comes in both white and colors. It is commonly available in 90lb and 110lb basis weights, and calculated using 25.5" x 30.5" sheets.

PAPER WEIGHT AND MEASURES

Paper weight depends on the type of paper you are referring to, since the weight of a particular paper is actually determined differently for different types of paper. For example, 20 lb bond is based on the weight of 500 sheets of paper measuring 17" x 22". On the other hand, 60lb cover is based on the weight of 500 sheets of paper measuring 20" x 26". The descriptions below more fully describe paper weights and measures.

GSM - Grams per Square Meter

One way of categorizing paper is by GSM, or, grams per square meter. Put another way, how much a one square meter sheet of text paper weighs, in grams. For example, copy paper weighs 75 gsm.

BASIS WEIGHT - Pounds per 500 sheets

Another way of categorizing paper is by weighing - not just one sheet, but 500 sheets of that particular paper. For text/bond paper, the size of the sheets measures 17" x 22". For example, 500 sheets of 20 pound paper weighs 50 pounds and is referred to as having a basis weight of 50.

On the other hand, the weight of cover paper is based on the weight of 500 sheets of a particular paper measuring 20" x 26". For example, 500 sheets of 60 pound cover weighs 60 pounds and is referred to as having a basis weight of 60. Go figure!

THICKNESS - As measured in average thousandths of an inch.

Another way of categorizing paper is simply measuring its thickness. This is done by using a micrometer or caliper which measures the thickness of a sheet of paper in thousands of an inch. For example, copy paper calipers at a thickness of .0005 inch.

POINTS - Another view of actual thickness

In the US, paper thickness is often expressed in "points", such as 10pt, 12pt, and so on. For example, a sheet of paper with a caliper measurement of .0035" equates to 3.5 points and a sheet of paper with an actual measurement of .0012" has 12pts.
